Garden project comes up roses

A neglected community rose garden has been transformed by Lend Lease, working with Integrated Services and other providers, as part of Community Day 2012.

The garden at Fry House, a transition house which offers accommodation to homeless people and helps those without an address who are searching for work, received a complete outdoor makeover when 20 members of staff at Lend Lease gave up a day of their time to make the old rose garden blossom again.

Teams worked hard to re-plant rose bushes, which were first put into the ground in the late 70s, cut back overgrowth and lay anti-weed mesh. A new perimeter fence and paving stones, all supplied by Integrated Services, were also laid, creating an outdoor space for all residents of Fry House to use and enjoy.

Mick Sherlock, Senior Procurement manager at Lend Lease, said: “It was a pleasure for us to give our time to such a worthwhile cause. Everyone deserves to live in pleasant surroundings and I know the garden will be used by many of the men and women who visit Fry house every year, as a place for relaxation and reflection.”

Steve Watts, Manager of Fry Housing Trusts Solihull Scheme, said: “We are grateful to Lend Lease for choosing us as one of their projects. I was amazed at the enthusiasm and hard work put in by all who attended and contributed. The revamped garden will provide an excellent place for residents, who have often led unsettled lives, to relax and unwind.  I commend all involved for caring about the local community and believe their actions will make for a better society.”

Nikki Corbett, Branch Manager at Aston Integrated Services, said: “We were pleased to be able to take the pressure off of Lend Lease and supply and deliver all the materials needed for the garden transformation.

“All of our Integrated Services branches try to get involved with the communities we work in and also support our customers’ charity initiatives, and seeing the end result – a beautiful garden – was fantastic.”
